NDSU Women’s Basketball Drops 84-78 Decision Against Drake

FARGO, N.D. – Drake used a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to comeback and top the North Dakota State women’s basketball team in the season opener, 84-78, at Scheels Center on Monday afternoon.

After the Bison (0-1) opened up a 10-point lead the half, 46-36, Drake (1-0) stormed back trimming the deficit down to five at the end of three quarters, 61-56. The Bulldogs, who finished last season with a 29-6 overall record, put together a momentum-shifting 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to steal the lead, 77-66, following a triple from Katie Dinnebier with 3:04 to play.

Abby Schulte attempted to pull the Bison back cutting the edge down to seven, 77-70, with a layup and a jumper with 2:29 remaining. However, Drake held off NDSU the rest of the way to secure the 84-78 victory.

Avery Koenen narrowly missed a double-double with a team-best 13 points and nine rebounds to go along with two steals. Abbie Draper added in 10 points with eight rebounds, while Molly Lenz also reached double digits in her Bison debut with 10 points and four rebounds.

As a team, the Bison shot 40.3 percent (27-67) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-13) from three. NDSU had 10 different players reach the scoring column with 31 points coming from the bench.

NDSU will continue its homestand hosting Eastern Illinois on Sunday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m., at Scheels Center.
