NDSU Softball Drops Pair to South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. – North Dakota State softball dropped both games of a doubleheader with South Dakota on Friday, falling 4-0 and 5-1 in Summit League play at Nygaard Field.
 
South Dakota took the lead in game one with a two-run home run in the third inning. They would go on to capitalize on two errors from NDSU to score another run in the third and then in the fourth. Clara Edwards scattered four Bison hits and had six strikeouts for the shutout win.
 
Madison Wihlm picked up the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts. Star Cortez finished with two of NDSU’s four hits in game one. Zoe King and Riley Leadstrom also had hits. Bella Dean had two walks and Leadstrom finished with the final walk for the Bison.
 
In game two, the Coyotes would capitalize on more errors from NDSU to score two runs in the first and fifth innings. South Dakota would add a fifth run in the sixth inning before the Bison scored a run on an RBI triple from Jasmyn Yessian for NDSU’s only run.
 
Kaitlyn Dunford allowed two earned runs in the loss, allowing four total runs on five hits in five innings. Cortez and Chloe Woldruff each had a hit and a walk. Reanna Rudd and Yessian recorded the other hits for the Bison.
 
With the losses, the Bison are locked into the No. 6 seed of the Summit League Tournament next week.
 
NDSU will wrap up the series with South Dakota and the regular season on Saturday, with first pitch against the Coyotes at Nygaard Field scheduled for 11 a.m.
