FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State soccer claimed the 2024 Summit League regular season championship on Sunday, October 27, with a 2-1 victory over St. Thomas at Dacotah Field in the regular season finale.
The Bison (10-5-3, 6-1-1 Summit League) finished the regular season with 19 points to claim the program’s first regular season title since 2016 and fourth overall. Denver finished second in the league with 17 points.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Morgan Russmann sparked a come-from-behind win for the first of two goals. Russmann took a header from Gabrielle Garrett, then flicked a ball past a defender, before firing a right footed shot into the corner to tie the game at 1-1 in the 61st minute.
Five minutes later, the Bison would be awarded a penalty following a handball in the box from the Tommies (5-9-3, 1-5-2 Summit League). Russmann would step up and convert the spot kick to put the Bison in front with her 11th goal of the season and eighth in league play.
Russmann’s 11th goal gave her the NDSU freshman record in the D1 era for goals in a season, passing Lauren Miller’s 10-goal season in 2013.
It’s the first 10-win season for the Bison since 2016 and the best league record (6-1-1) for NDSU since 2015.
With the regular season championship, the Bison will host the 2024 Summit League championship semifinals and final in Fargo at Dacotah Field. The semifinals will take place on Thursday, November 7, with the final being held on Sunday, November 10.
The Bison will play the winner of No. 5 seed Oral Roberts and No. 4 seed Omaha in the quarterfinals, which will be held on Saturday, November 2.
