NDSU Soccer Tops South Dakota 4-2

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State soccer picked up a 4-2 win over South Dakota Sunday afternoon in Summit League play at Dacotah Field.

Gabrielle Garrett gave the Bison (9-5-3, 5-1-1 Summit League) the lead in the 11th minute with her third goal of the season. Devon Kavanagh won the ball off of a South Dakota (3-7-5, 1-2-3 Summit League) goal kick and played a ball through to Garrett, who then fired the shot in off the left post.

Early in the second half, the Bison doubled their lead from the penalty spot. Morgan Russmann drew a foul from South Dakota’s Taylor Mulligan in the middle of the penalty area. Russmann then stepped up and converted the penalty to put the Bison in front 2-0 in the 47th minute.

South Dakota would answer two minutes later with a counter attack goal, as Brooklyn Bordson set up Ashby Johnston, who fired a shot past Payton Mulberry to cut the Bison lead in half in the 49th minute.

The Bison answered back as Hannah Arnold restored a two-goal lead with her third goal of the season in the 58th minute. Russmann found Alicia Nead at the top of the box, who set up Arnold and the sophomore finished into the top left corner for a 3-1 lead and her third game-winning goal of the season.

In the 62nd minute, Russmann scored her second goal of the game on a quick breakout attack to make it 4-1. Olivia Watson won possession in the defensive half and played a ball up to Sidney Armstrong. After a few touches, Armstrong then found Russmann with a through ball and the freshman scored her league leading ninth goal of the season and sixth in league play. The assist from Armstrong was her first collegiate point.

South Dakota would add a goal in the 80th minute, as Sam Luft scored on a free kick to wrap up the scoring.

Russmann became the first Bison to score two goals and an assist in a game since Olivia Watson did it one day shy of two years ago on Oct, 21, 2022 in a 4-1 win against the same South Dakota team.

The Bison will close out the regular season next Sunday, as North Dakota State welcomes in St. Thomas on the final day of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. between the Bison and Tommies at Dacotah Field.
