Nancy J. Callahan, 71, Grand Forks, died Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at her home, surrounded by her family.
Nancy Jane Callahan, the daughter of Merlyn “Murphy” and Harriet (Holt) Callahan, was born in Grafton, North Dakota, on December 20, 1952. She was an active member of Grafton Lutheran Church, and was baptized, attended first communion, and confirmed there. She was raised and educated in Grafton, and graduated from Grafton High School in 1971. She graduated from Mayville State College with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. Nancy married Gary Winger, and they had two daughters, Kami and Brooke.
Nancy was a longtime office administrator for Black Gold Farms. She earned the Black Gold Horizon Award in 2010 and was named to the Black Gold Farms Hall of Fame in 2022. She was a gymnastics coach at Mayville-Portland High School and a volleyball coach at Midway High School. She loved following her grandchildren in all of their sporting events. Along with her daughters, her grandchildren were the loves of her life. She enjoyed doing any activity with them, including baking, traveling and watching sports. They visited “Nana” many times a week just to hang out.
Nancy enjoyed canning, sewing, quilting and cruising. She made and donated many mittens to the Grand Forks Foster Care System and Thompson School, along with many other organizations. She made masks and donated them to many area organizations and schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also was a member of the Forest River Legion Auxiliary.
Nancy is survived by her daughters, Kami (Neil) Danner, and Brooke Winger; grandchildren Chance Danner, Reese Danner and Cash Danner; siblings Colleen “Kande” Koehmstedt, Jody (David) Clemens, Patricia (Robert) Gust, and Paul Callahan; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Murphy and Harriet Callahan.
Nancy’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Altru Cancer Center and Altru Health System staff and so many others that helped us through this journey.
Memorial Services will be 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, in Amundson Funeral Home, 2975 S. 42nd St., Grand Forks. Visitation will be for one hour before the service in the funeral home. Interment will be in Grafton Lutheran Cemetery.
