Mitchell Stewart Skeim was born October 5, 1943 in Greenbush, MN (in Grandma Hagen’s house) the son of Adolph and Doris (Hagen) Skeim. He was baptized into the Christian faith. He attended school in International Falls, MN graduating with the class of 1962. Mitch was a tremendous athlete in high school in football and track & field and was a self-taught Regional Champion in the shot put. Mitch then attended Bemidji State College where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Education and played on the Beaver football team.
On May 12, 1966, Mitch entered into service with the United States Army. He was trained as a Medical Corpsman and worked as a Forward Surgical Nurse for one year in Vietnam during the Vietnam Conflict. Mitch was Honorably Discharged on August 11, 1969 and spent the next three years in the Army Reserves.
On June 19, 1971, Mitch married the love of his life, Nancy Younggren at the Presbyterian Church in Hallock, MN. They made their home in Goodridge, MN where their first child, Shane was born. In 1976 the family moved to Thief River Falls where their daughter, Kelly and son, Chad were born. In 1977, they carved out a home in the woods in Norden Township, west of Thief River Falls where they continued to reside.
Mitch worked as a Surgical Technician at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls for many years and also worked on the ambulance. He retired after almost 40 years of service as a Surgical Tech. Mitch described the relationship with his co-workers was like a second family.
With his passion for Track & Field, Mitch volunteered on the track team as a coach when his kids were at Franklin Middle School. He followed his kids as a coach in Track & Field through their years at Lincoln High School and continued to work with the throwing program until 2018. He also coached his grandkids in field events to be successful at their respective schools and enjoyed critiquing them on their games. Mitch was honored as Section 8 AA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016.
Mitch also enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his dogs, working in his yard, and restoring his classic convertible. He loved following his kids and grandkids in their activities and enjoyed conversations regarding his athletics, his time in the army and his kids & grandkids successes.
Mitch had a good sense of humor, was honest and opinionated, passionate and gentle to his grandkids.
Survivors include his loving wife, Nancy of Thief River Falls; children, Shane Skeim of Newfolden, MN, Kelly (Corey) Zimmerman of Moorhead, MN and Chad (DeeDee) Skeim of Greenbush, MN; grandchildren, Morgan, Brady, Sidney, Micah, Max, Cooper and Kinsley; brother, David Skeim of Bemidji, MN; niece, Shannon (Ernie) Heifort; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; step-dad, Tom Crutchfield; sister-in-law, Helen Skeim; and nephew, David Hunter Skeim.
Mitchell Skeim, 77 of Thief River Falls, MN passed away peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2020 at his home with his loving family by his side.
