Minnesota Supreme Court Upholds Law Restoring Voting Rights to People with Felony Records

ST. PAUL, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – The Minnesota Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed a lawsuit challenging the state’s “Restore the Vote” Act, a 2023 law that reinstated voting rights for over 55,000 Minnesotans with felony convictions who have been released from prison. Attorney General Keith Ellison praised the decision, emphasizing that if individuals are not currently incarcerated, are U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old, and have lived in Minnesota for at least 20 days without a court revoking their voting rights, they are eligible to vote in the state. However, Doug Seaton of the Upper Midwest Law Center expressed concerns, stating that the decision leaves Minnesotans without clear guidance on the legality of significant changes to voting laws.
