ST PAUL, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) – The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has confirmed a rare human rabies death, the fourth in the state since 2000. The individual, over the age of 65, was exposed to a bat in western Minnesota in July, with the diagnosis confirmed by the CDC on September 20.
State health officials are working with the family and healthcare facility to assess any additional rabies exposure. Fortunately, there is no ongoing risk to the general public at this time.
This tragic case serves as a reminder that Minnesota bats can carry rabies. Health officials urge the public to avoid contact with bats. If a bat is found in a living space, it should be safely captured and tested for rabies, as a bat bite may be painless and leave no visible mark.
Rabies is almost always fatal if untreated, but prompt treatment after exposure is nearly 100% effective. For more information on rabies and bat safety, visit the MDH website or call 651-201-5414 during business hours.
