Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — A coalition of energy advocates is calling on lawmakers to end Minnesota’s 30-year moratorium on new nuclear power development, arguing that nuclear energy is key to achieving the state’s carbon-free electricity goals by 2040.
The Minnesota Nuclear Energy Alliance, backed by groups like the Minnesota Rural Electric Association, is pushing for legislative action to lift the ban, which has been in place since 1994.
Why Now?
Derek Mo, of the Minnesota Rural Electric Association, stated:
“We’re looking for this 1994 moratorium on even thinking about or planning for that as an option to be lifted by the legislature.”
While the group does not yet have a specific plan for a new nuclear power plant, Mo says there is bipartisan support for lifting the restriction, and he is optimistic the ban could be overturned this legislative session.
What’s Next for Nuclear in Minnesota?
If the ban is lifted, Minnesota could explore modern nuclear technology as part of its clean energy strategy. However, concerns over safety, waste management, and cost may still fuel opposition.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for updates!
