MINNESOTA (trfnews.i234.me) – As bear hunting season kicks off this Sunday, September 1, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is issuing an important reminder to all hunters: Do not shoot research bears. These bears are crucial for ongoing studies and are easily identifiable by their large, colorful ear tags and radio collars.
The DNR is currently monitoring 48 radio-collared black bears across the state, particularly in hunting zones 27, 45, and other areas within the no-quota zone. These bears are most commonly found in or near the Chippewa National Forest, Camp Ripley Military Reserve, and Pillsbury State Forest, but they often range far beyond these areas.
Hunters are asked to be vigilant and protect these valuable research bears, ensuring the continued success of important wildlife research.
