Reports say the U.S. Department of Justice is reviewing his public comments.
Reports also name Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey as a subject of subpoenas.
As of Friday night, neither leader confirmed being served.
What investigators are looking at
Several outlets reported a criminal probe tied to immigration enforcement in Minnesota.
Sources said it reviews claims of a plan to impede federal agents.
One law cited in reporting is 18 U.S.C. § 372.
The Justice Department has not shared details about the case.
Leaders respond
Walz called the probe political and said it targets opponents.
He pointed to the January 7 shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis.
Pam Bondi, the U.S. attorney general, posted, “No one is above the law.”
Frey said the investigation is meant to intimidate him.
He said his focus remains public safety and city services.

ICE surge and shootings
The Department of Homeland Security says a large federal surge was needed.
DHS says the goal is to arrest people it calls dangerous offenders.

On January 7, a federal immigration officer shot and killed Renee Good.
Reports based on a fire department record said Good had four gunshot wounds.
On January 14, another person was shot during a federal arrest in north Minneapolis.
Judge limits crowd tactics
A federal judge issued an order tied to protests around the operations.
The order bars agents from detaining peaceful protesters who are not interfering.
The order also limits tear gas and similar crowd tools in those cases.
The lawsuit was backed by the ACLU of Minnesota, reports said.
Trump raises the Insurrection Act
President Donald Trump said he could invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota.
He said he does not think it is needed right now.

HUD opens a housing review
The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced a fair housing investigation.
HUD says it is reviewing parts of Minneapolis housing plans and programs.
Craig Trainor said the agency will enforce the Fair Housing Act.
FIRE warned against treating criticism of policy as a crime.
