McKenzie County: Deputy Fatally Shoots Man Amid Domestic Dispute

McKenzie County (trfnews.i234.me)—A tragic event unfolded in McKenzie County on Monday evening when deputies responded to a domestic disturbance, resulting in the fatal shooting of 65-year-old Walter Fitzwater.

At approximately 7:21 p.m., the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a domestic disturbance involving a firearm at a residence south of Watford City. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Fitzwater and a female on the front lawn. Despite verbal commands, Fitzwater advanced toward the deputies. An attempt to subdue him with a taser was unsuccessful, leading to a physical confrontation during which both Fitzwater and a deputy fell to the ground. Fitzwater reportedly stated multiple times that he was armed and continued to approach the deputies, disregarding further commands. This escalation prompted one deputy to discharge their firearm, striking Fitzwater.

Deputies provided immediate medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Fitzwater was transported to the McKenzie County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is conducting a thorough and independent investigation into the incident to ensure transparency and accountability. Per agency policy, the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
