Becker County (TRF News) – DNR Officers Seize Over 50 Illegally Caught Walleye in Massive Crackdown

Minnesota DNR Conservation Officers have cracked down on illegal fishing and snowmobile violations across Becker County and surrounding areas, seizing over 50 illegally caught walleyes, issuing multiple citations for angling violations, and investigating cases of illegal snowmobile operation.

The large-scale enforcement sweep targeted popular fishing hotspots like Lake of the Woods, Red Lake River, and Upper Red Lake, as well as snowmobile trails throughout the region.

Major Walleye Bust on Lake of the Woods

  • CO Nicholas Prachar (Baudette West) and other officers investigated a group of 16 anglers who were caught with over 50 walleye over the legal limit on Lake of the Woods.
  • Multiple citations and enforcement actions were issued for over-limit fishing, illegal fish filleting, and extra fishing lines.
  • CO Paul Kennedy (Baudette East) assisted in the investigation, finding several unattended lines and violations involving angling with extra lines.

Illegal Snowmobile Operation and Fatal Crash Investigation

  • CO Angela Warren (Mahnomen) and other officers patrolled snowmobile trails, issuing citations for expired registrations, reckless operation, and equipment violations.
  • CO Landyn Saewert (Wadena) assisted the Becker County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a fatal snowmobile crash on Two Inlets Lake, where a snowmobile collided with a fish house, resulting in the operator’s death.

Other Enforcement Actions Taken

  • CO Brianna Shaw (Blackduck South) issued citations for open burning of prohibited materials and unlicensed ice shelters.
  • CO Felicia Znajda (Osakis) led a team to patrol high-traffic fishing areas, issuing numerous violations for fishing with too many lines, unattended lines, littering, and unregistered snowmobiles.
  • CO Bobby Stringer (Wheaton) reported multiple citations for extra fishing lines, no shelter licenses, and littering on the ice.

Reminder to Anglers and Snowmobilers

Authorities are reminding the public to:

  • Follow state regulations on fish limits and license requirements.
  • Properly dispose of unused bait and litter on the ice.
  • Ensure snowmobiles are registered and operated safely to prevent accidents.

With strict enforcement efforts underway, violators can expect heavy fines and potential legal consequences.
