Marshall County, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving fake “missed jury duty” calls.
The sheriff’s office says it has received reports of people getting calls that appear to come from the sheriff’s office phone number. Officials say scammers can “spoof” the number, which means the caller ID may look real even when it is not.
What the Scam May Look Like
- The caller claims you missed jury duty.
- The caller may say there is a warrant for your arrest.
- The caller may tell you to pay over the phone to “clear” the warrant.
- The caller may send a link and say you must fill out a form.
What the Sheriff’s Office Says to Do
Officials say you should not give any information or make payments over the phone. Do not provide banking details, gift card numbers, or personal information.
They also warn people not click on any links sent by the caller. Those links can be used to steal personal data or install harmful software.
The sheriff’s office says if you fail to appear for jury duty, you will be notified by mail. Officials say they do not call people to tell them they missed jury duty.
