Mark Leonard Mason – Obituary

Mark Leonard Mason transitioned to his eternal home June 14, 2024 from a fatal car accident in Tucson, AZ. He was born March 10, 1972 on his brother Karl’s sixth birthday. Mark’s passions were music and bringing harmony to all the lives he touched. He worked diligently as Chief Information Officer for Southwest Strings in Tucson, AZ. Growing up in Grand Forks, ND, he attended West School, Valley Jr, Grand Forks Central, and graduated with honors from the University of North Dakota in Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Mark is known for his incredible intellect and talent. He learned to play five instruments and performed with various bands including Ice 9, Nuclear Wheat Field, Still Life Telescope, and The Minds. Peppermint Hippo, his latest band, has produced three albums.

Mark was a compassionate vegan who advocated for animal rights and animal rescue. He will be missed dearly by his five fur children, his parents Earl and Sandy Mason, his sister Kristen Nelson (LeRoy), his life partner Jessica Shuman, his late brother Karl Mason’s family: wife Meta and children Skylar, Hannah, and Dakota, and Aunts Sharon Kuether and Molly Boyd (Bill).

We remember fondly Mark’s favorite sayings:

“It is what it is,” and (in a Minnesota-speak accent) “It could be worse.”

Mark’s generosity, kindness, and service to others will keep his memory alive.

The family asks that any donations be given to Mark’s animal care organization called No Kill Pima County at nokillpimacounty.org/donate.
