Minneapolis police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead late Thursday night.
Officers were called to an apartment building on the 1100 block of James Avenue North around 10:32 p.m. after reports of gunfire.
Responding officers located the victim inside the building, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary information suggests that the victim was inside the apartment when someone fired shots at him.
The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived and no arrests have been made.
A chaplain was requested to support family members gathered at the scene and police said several children were upstairs in the home during the incident but were unharmed, per initial radio dispatches. Investigators are working to piece together what led up to the shooting and forensic teams have processed the scene for evidence.
“Our investigators are fully dedicated to bringing justice to the victim and providing answers to his family. We strongly encourage anyone with information about this tragic incident to come forward,” MPD Chief Brian O’Hara said.
The identity of the victim, along with the official cause and manner of his death, is expected to be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner in the coming days.
