Minneapolis, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – Authorities say a man died of an apparent suicide during a traffic stop Tuesday evening in Minneapolis.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. on July 22, 2025, near the intersection of 36th Avenue North and Thomas Avenue North.

Detectives attempted to stop a vehicle with no license plates. As two detectives approached the car, they reported hearing a gunshot. The driver was found slumped over inside. Deputies removed the man from the vehicle and began life-saving measures, with medics also attempting aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials confirmed no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons. A passenger was in the vehicle but was not physically harmed.

Because sheriff’s detectives were present when the shot was fired, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has been called to investigate. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the man’s identity and determine the official cause of death.

The sheriff’s office called the event devastating and expressed condolences to the man’s family and those who witnessed the incident.
