MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis man, Eddie James Freeman, 23, is facing multiple felony charges after a chaotic series of events on I-94 East Saturday night. Authorities allege that Freeman, enraged after his girlfriend tried to end their relationship while driving, grabbed the steering wheel, causing the car to crash.
Following the crash, Freeman allegedly fired multiple gunshots, with bullet holes found near the driver’s side door. Responding troopers spotted Freeman, who reportedly fired at them but missed. Officers quickly surrounded Freeman, who was seen tossing a handgun before his arrest.
The incident prompted the closure of I-94 between Dowling Avenue North and West Broadway for several hours. Minnesota State Patrol trooper Mark Vande Steeg discharged his weapon during the standoff, and Freeman was taken into custody without being hit. Vande Steeg has been placed on critical incident leave.
