Becker County (trfnews.i234.me) – A traffic stop triggered by loud exhaust ended in a felony DWI conviction for Christopher Allen Schultz, 37, of rural Callaway, Minnesota.

According to court records, on January 31, 2023, a deputy observed Schultz’s vehicle speeding from Casey’s gas station on Highway 34. The loud popping noises from the exhaust prompted the stop. Schultz was already known to have active warrants.

Deputies observed telltale signs of drug use—heat bumps on his tongue and constricted pupils. A field sobriety test supported signs of impairment. During a search, 1.17 grams of meth was discovered.

Although a felony drug charge was dropped in a plea deal, on May 23, Judge Gretchen Thilmony sentenced Schultz to 48 months in prison, stayed for five years. He received 180 days in jail (already served), a $500 fine, and was placed on five years of supervised probation.

Schultz must also:

  • Undergo a comprehensive assessment

  • Complete aftercare and cognitive skills training

  • Attend a victim impact or MADD panel
