Local Drug Overdoses Persist as UND Receives Grant to Combat the Crisis

GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) Drug overdoses continue around our region as UND receives a major grant to combat the problem.
everyone Neil Berg here at the Grand Forks Police Department a recent video lot of Boston posted on Facebook captures the reality of drug abuse this video shows a man walking up to a car recording with a cell phone and waking up the people in the car the woman wakes up but her partner isn’t able to wake up she has to go in the back and of her trunk and get some narcan to wake them up and unfortunately this isn’t a problem just happening in big cities it’s happening in towns around here big and small just down the street we’ve had quite a few of these overdoses in Grand Forks yeah we have we started seeing them last year and it’s continued into this year how many of you responded to so far this year 14 14 yeah and that’s just reported so if people think that’s all that’s happening there’s more likely many more yeah I think that 14 is probably less than the tip of the iceberg really what’s going on I don’t know I think that people don’t appreciate on dangerous these drugs are you know when we used to see issues with prescription medications being used illegally at least with prescription medications they’re usually made in a legitimate factory that very carefully controls the amount of whatever the substance is that goes into them and what they were ordering here recently a lot of that comes over the internet from overseas or from other places where they’re made in sort of clandestine labs and there’s really no quality control there so that’s another dangerous part of it you don’t know how much of whatever substance is actually in in the pill that you’re taking so if you’re gonna play with this stuff and just try it you could die very easily we’re seeing that happening as the problem continues und has just been awarded a 3.8 million dollar grant to combat the problem Thomason Heitkamp professor in the College of Nursing says the funding puts you in deep at the regional focal point of a nationwide effort to combat the effects of drug abuse Heitkamp says their research is all about helping people get on the path to recovery with the appropriate supports in Grand Forks I’m Neil Berg reporting for i-news TV
