WEST FARGO, ND (trfnews.i234.me) We have the news conference regarding a major fire in West Fargo, North Dakota.
good morning Jerry lawyer assistant chief West Fargo Police Department I just want to give a quick update to what’s going on with the fire at Main Avenue there is a fire tank that has been engulfed in flames the capacity of that tank is 45,000 barrels there was 30,000 barrels in it at the time the first thing we want to make sure that the public is aware of is there’s no danger of a large explosion occurring there’s no leak that is actually occurring on the scene right now the main concern we have at this point is obviously the large black cloud from the fire this is diesel fuel or fuel oil there’s a hazard of possibly if you were to be standing directly in the path of this we if you have some prior health concerns it’s a fire that’s not going to be good for you at this time there is a shelter in place that was put out to people this is not a tornado we don’t need them to stay in an interior room at this point it’s really more of an inconvenience to the public than anything else we need people to stay out of the area we’ve had a lot of people try to sneak up to take pictures the fire fighters do not need any extra hazards with people being injured so we need everybody to stay out of the area this could possibly be a long term event as it takes time for the diesel and a few oil to burn it off so please do feel free to go about your normal day and your normal activities but again just be cognizant of the smoke if there’s a large amount of smoke in your area your house at that time just to go ahead and stay inside the wind is supposed to be picking up it changed a little sooner than we had all anticipated so that has kind of directed us into this relative the shelter in place we just weren’t sure what the wind was doing at that time is the danger are you ready for questions sorry yeah sir is the shelter in place a concern over the fuel source or you know obviously there’s a there’s a potential danger to the public over you know the cloud that’s coming from the fire the potential danger is really more individual basis based upon if you have a prior history of say COPD or something like that obviously smoke and fires is not going to help you in that situation so those are the people that we want to really make sure that they’re staying inside so this is really hard to do not knowing everybody’s medical history to send out something city wide your area wide on it on a situation that is not really a city wide it’s more of an individual basis so we’re just people need to be cautious and aware of what’s happening but make decisions accordingly don’t go standing outside taking pictures and filming and if there’s a large amount of smoke around your around your house around you at the time you stay inside we’re not having people shot furnaces off or anything like that right now just stay inside where hopefully the situation can be resolved quickly
