Everyone is welcome, said Nechepurenko, of Grand Forks, who is organizing the chapter. Anyone who is age 16 or older can join the League.
The League of Women Voters is “a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights, build grassroots power in our communities, and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy,” according to a meeting poster headlined “Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy.”
While chapters may have different priorities, League members usually focus on voter education and advocacy or issue engagement through activities such as presentations, candidate forums, letters to the editor, and speaker events, Nechepurenko said.
The efforts of the organization as a whole revolve around voting rights advocacy, a voters guide, election observation, providing information on how to run for public office, and encouraging civic engagement.
In December, an initial meeting to gauge interest in initiating the chapter was held, with about a dozen women in attendance, said Nechepurenko, who has received help from League members in Fargo and Valley City in efforts to revitalize the chapter here.
According to chapter archives, the Greater Grand Forks League of Women Voters has been active in the past, particularly from the 1960s to the 1990s, but was dissolved at some point, Nechepurenko said.
