Langdon, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Langdon man is in custody after a deadly shooting in Cavalier County.
Authorities say Russell Andrew Hiltner is accused of killing a man on March 26. Court documents say the shooting happened inside a home in Langdon.
What Witnesses Reported
According to documents, the Cavalier County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the shooting that day. Deputies were then told Hiltner had taken the victim’s vehicle and fled.
An eyewitness told deputies she saw Hiltner approach the victim and hug him. She said Hiltner then told the victim, “you stole something from me.”
Documents say Hiltner then went to a couch and pulled out a pistol. The witness said he shot the victim moments later.
The witness also told deputies she feared for her own life. She believed she might be shot as well.
Vehicle Found in Wales
Authorities later found the stolen vehicle in Wales, North Dakota. Documents say the vehicle was pinned against a large tree.
Deputies say they made contact with Hiltner at that scene. They also reported finding a 9mm handgun on the passenger seat.
Hiltner was taken to Langdon Hospital for treatment. He was later airlifted to Altru Health System.
Search Warrant and Charges
Documents say a search warrant was executed at 12:20 a.m. on March 27. The search was carried out by the North Dakota Attorney General’s criminal justice resources division.
Investigators said the victim was found in the living room with a gunshot wound. A bullet was found in a living room wall.
Authorities also reported finding a 9mm shell casing near the victim. A 9mm magazine was also found inside the home.
Documents say the magazine was compatible with the handgun found in the vehicle. After the search, Hiltner was arrested for murder, theft, and terrorizing.
He remains in custody at Altru hospital. Charges are allegations, and the case will move through court.
