La Crescent Man Sentenced for Repeated Sexual Assault of Mentally Impaired Teen

CALEDONIA, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – David Laverne Twite, a 66-year-old man from La Crescent, has been sentenced in Houston County District Court after being accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a mentally impaired woman over the course of five years, starting when she was just 13. Twite was charged with multiple felonies, including two counts of criminal sexual conduct and one count of stalking. In April, he pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and was sentenced on August 7 to two years in prison, which is stayed for 10 years under supervised probation.

The victim, who is now an adult, has mild to moderate developmental cognitive disabilities and is speech-language impaired. The assaults were reported by the victim’s mother to the La Crescent Police Department in April 2022, with most of the incidents occurring in Dakota County and one in Twite’s La Crescent apartment.

Police uncovered explicit text messages and notes between Twite and the victim on her cell phone. Despite denying the assaults, Twite admitted to possibly touching the victim inappropriately while “wrestling around.” Twite also attempted to bribe the victim’s mother to drop the charges, offering $10,000, which led to further investigation by law enforcement.
