MINNEAPOLIS (trfnews.i234.me) – A devastating crime that shook a community will be revisited by the justice system. Cody Fohrenkam, accused of killing 15-year-old Deshaun Hill Jr., will face trial again after his initial conviction was overturned.
Deshaun, a star quarterback and guard on North High School’s basketball team, lost his life in February 2022 when he accidentally brushed shoulders with Fohrenkam while walking down Glenwood Ave. Witnesses reported that Fohrenkam then pulled out a handgun and fired three or four shots at Deshaun, striking him in the head.
Fohrenkam was found guilty of second-degree murder but his conviction was later thrown out by the Minnesota Court of Appeals due to police misconduct. The court ruled that Minneapolis police had illegally detained Fohrenkam, handcuffing and questioning him despite a St. Louis County judge’s order for his release in another matter.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office took the case to the Minnesota Supreme Court but was denied review. Now, the case is headed back to county court for retrial on two counts of second-degree murder.
“We will prosecute Mr. Fohrenkam to hold him accountable for the murder of Deshaun Hill,” said Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty in a statement.
