MOORHEAD, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) – A Minnesota judge has ruled against a motion to overturn the murder conviction of Jamie Dennis-Gianakos, a woman who pleaded guilty to her role in the brutal 1997 murder of babysitter Anne-Marie Camp. Gianakos, sentenced to 25 years in prison, is currently on supervised release until October.
Gianakos sought to have her conviction vacated under Minnesota’s Felony Reform Act, but the judge determined that she failed to provide sufficient evidence to support her claim of not being a “major participant” in the murder. The court’s decision affirms that Gianakos played a significant role in Camp’s death.
According to prosecutors, Camp, a Fargo resident and the couple’s babysitter, was killed by Jamie and her husband, Michael Gianakos, at an abandoned farm near Sabin, Minnesota. The motive behind the grisly crime stemmed from Camp’s knowledge of a motel robbery the couple had committed. Michael Gianakos is currently serving a life sentence for the murder; his initial state conviction was overturned, but he was later convicted in federal court.
Clay County Attorney Brian Melton expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating, “The Clay County Attorney’s Office is very pleased with the result. The rule of law stands, and Ms. Gianakos, who was heavily involved in the horrific murder of Anne-Marie Camp, will not have her conviction vacated.”
