Balm Lake – Jay Roger Borchert, age 82, resident of Balm Lake, MN, passed away in Erskine on February 15, 2021.
Jay was born on December 20, 1938, in Drake, ND to Ross and Beulah Borchert. He grew up in North Dakota, Minnesota, and graduated from Glendive High School in Glendive, MT. After high school, Jay attended and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in history from Concordia College in Moorhead.
Jay married Carol Lehrer on June 24, 1962. Together, Jay and Carol lived in Thief River Falls, Warroad, Wannaska, and Debs, MN. They spent their last twenty years together living on the beautiful shores of Balm Lake. They often spent their winters in New Braunfels, TX.
Jay was an insurance agent for many years in northwestern Minnesota and also served as an interim lay pastor in many Lutheran churches across northern Minnesota. Over the last twenty years, he served full-time at the Debs-Puposky parish and in his retirement he served part-time at the Waskish parish.
Jay was a member of the Thief River Falls Jaycees, served the BSU Campus Ministry, was on the Board of Directors for the Lake of the Woods Bible Camp, and would often lead trips to bible camps with his confirmation students.
Jay was preceded in death by his wife Carol, his parents, Ross and Beulah, and his brother Lee. He is survived by his children: Gayle Borchert (Jon Morphew) of Monticello and Paul Borchert (Sarah) of Nisswa. His sister Judith Borchert of Polson, MT. His grandchildren: Ava, Elsa, and Willa Borchert.
Jay loved spending time with his family, fishing for walleyes on Balm Lake and Red Lake, deer hunting, duck hunting in Canada, and spending countless hours at flea markets and antique stores searching for treasures.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, a celebration of life service will be held when we are able to safely gather together.
