JAMESTOWN, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) – On December 3, 2024, at approximately 1:17 a.m., Jamestown Police Department officers responded to reports of an armed individual behind Fred’s Den bar, located at 113 1st Ave. S. The individual, identified as 27-year-old Devin Quinn Fontenot, had been involved in a physical altercation inside the bar and was subsequently removed. After his removal, Fontenot was observed in the parking lot armed with a gun and a knife.
Upon arrival, Sergeant Cory Beckman, a five-year veteran of the Jamestown Police Department and member of the James/Valley Special Operations Team, encountered Fontenot actively firing rounds from a rifle in the parking lot. Despite commands to disarm, Fontenot refused to comply, posing a threat to the safety of the officer and others. In response, Sgt. Beckman discharged his weapon, striking Fontenot. Officers administered immediate first aid, and Fontenot was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased from his injuries.
Following standard protocol, Sgt. Beckman has been placed on paid administrative leave while the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducts a thorough review of the incident. No further information will be released by the Jamestown Police Department until the completion of the ND BCI investigation, internal policy investigation, and administrative review.
