Investigation of Cash Missing from Mail Deliveries in Berthold, North Dakota

Police Chief Al Schmidt says his department received several reports of missing mail, including packages and graduation cards with missing cash. Schmidt began receiving calls about the issue in April, with the thefts affecting eight households. On Monday, he turned the case over to federal agents with the postal organization, who have identified a suspect. “I’m pretty sure it’s the responsible person, but since it’s their case now, I can’t really release too much,” Schmidt said. He noted that mail theft is uncommon and is considered a federal crime with severe penalties.
