What some people may not be aware of : The US imports more than 60% of fruits and vegetables for consumption while using Tax Payers money for subsidizing crops for export . ( grains , corn , and soy beans ) are a few of these crops . If we grow more of the veggies and fruits here it would be smarter , but this means farmers would have to work harder and in some areas water is an issue but not a barrier . The US exported 1.29 million metric tons of beef last year We imported 365 Metric tons of beef last year , The Beef industry is trying to say importing beef is going to drive prices up but it is not true . We export much more than we import .
