MARSHALL COUNTY, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – Authorities have released new details about a weekend hunting accident near Newfolden, Minnesota.

According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to a rural area near Florian Slough Township on Saturday after a report that a 25-year-old man had been shot in the upper thigh while hunting.

The caller told dispatchers the man was alert and conscious and that bleeding had been controlled. Investigators say the incident occurred when two brothers took a break from hunting and laid their firearms across the backseat of a vehicle. They then placed their hunting gear on top of the guns. When they returned to retrieve the gear and prepare to go back out, one of the firearms discharged, striking the man in the leg.

Emergency crews from Newfolden Rescue, Marshall County Ambulance, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene. The injured hunter was transported to Sanford Health in Thief River Falls for treatment.

No foul play is suspected, and officials are reminding hunters to always unload and safely store firearms before handling gear or entering vehicles.
