Shawano County ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A homicide investigation is underway in Shawano County after a man was found shot to death on rural hunting property west of Tigerton late Wednesday night.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded around 9:15 p.m. to a property on County Road M in the Town of Germania. A caller told dispatchers that his friend had been shot by another man on the property.

Caller Reported Shooting and Took Cover

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the caller locked himself inside a building after reporting that another man on the property had fired at his friend. He told dispatchers he feared for his safety and said he would defend himself if needed.

While still on the line with dispatchers, the caller stated the suspect tried to break into the building. The caller then fired a gun at the man as he attempted to enter.

Deputies Confronted the Suspect

Deputies arrived and found the suspect outside the home. He did not follow commands at first but was taken into custody a short time later without further incident.

Authorities said the suspect, a 74-year-old Brent Hofman from Clintonville, was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. He was later booked into the Shawano County Jail on homicide-related charges.

Victim Found Dead in Garage

Deputies searched the property and found a deceased man inside a garage. The victim was identified as a 67-year-old man from Greenleaf, Wisconsin.

Investigators said the three men — the victim, suspect, and caller — were known to each other. They shared ownership of the hunting property where the shooting took place.

Investigation Continues

The motive for the shooting has not been released. Officials confirmed Brent Hofman fully cooperated and offered a detailed account of events before and after the gunfire.

The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation, Stockbridge-Munsee Police Department, Tigerton Ambulance, and the Shawano County Coroner’s Office helped at the scene.

Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
