Hermantown (trfnews.i234.me) — Officials are investigating an explosion and fire in Hermantown.

The incident was reported Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 2026. The location was the Green Acres Townhomes area. The site sits northwest of Duluth.

What officials have said

In early radio traffic, responders reported an explosion in a townhome unit. They also reported multiple fires. Several units were requested to the scene.

The City of Hermantown issued a public update at 12:25 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 1. The city said the area had been secured. The city also said there was still “extensive public safety work” to do. Officials asked the public to avoid the area unless needed.

Location and closures

Northern News Now reported the incident near Lavaque Road. It was south of Highway 53 and north of Silver Leaf Street. The station said Lavaque Road was closed near Green Acres Road.

Natalie Hoepner wrote the report. Northern News Now reporter Ella Shoeberl shared the details later. The station reported damage beyond the initial unit. It said other structures were affected.

A city spokesperson told the station that ten fire departments responded. Other agencies also assisted. Crews also worked to place evacuated residents in temporary housing.

Shelter and next steps

City officials set Hermantown City Hall as a shelter site. Officials said it was also a reunification location. Crews worked to help displaced residents.

As of Sunday morning, officials had not confirmed any injuries. A cause had not been released. The investigation remained active.
