Hennepin County ( trfnews.i234.me ) – A Hopkins man is facing serious charges after police say he brutally attacked his grandmother inside their apartment. The assault left her with life-threatening injuries.

According to court records, 56-year-old Nermin Mandal has been charged with first-degree assault. The attack happened on August 29 inside a home on Smetana Road.

Victim Found Unconscious

Police were called after Mandal’s adult son stopped by to check on the pair. He found the victim unconscious on the couch, her face covered in dried blood. Officers reported she had severe swelling, broken arms bent at unnatural angles, facial lacerations, and swollen eyes. Flies were swarming around her as she lay moaning, the complaint states.

The victim was taken to the hospital. Doctors diagnosed a brain bleed, multiple facial fractures, a sternum fracture, and other injuries. She was intubated and remains unconscious. Her survival chances were described as uncertain when charges were filed.

Suspect in Custody

Mandal was found inside the apartment with blood on his hands and shirt. Police say he made bizarre claims, including that his grandmother was an “alien” who harmed his daughter. His son told officers that Mandal suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and was in deep psychosis during the attack.

Mandal was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Jail. A judge set bail at $150,000 with conditions. These include no contact with the victim, no weapons, taking prescribed medication, and electronic home monitoring if released.

Possible Penalty

If convicted of first-degree assault causing great bodily harm, Mandal faces up to 20 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
