GRAND FORKS, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me) – A Grand Forks man is facing numerous felony charges following a dramatic police chase through the city on Saturday night.
High-Speed Pursuit
Officers attempted to stop 32-year-old Shawn Schweigert after noticing his vehicle had two different license plates. Instead of pulling over, Schweigert sped off despite the patrol vehicle’s lights and siren being activated.
Dangerous Maneuvers
Schweigert led police to S. Washington Street, where he continued to speed and drove on the berm to avoid traffic. As he tried to re-enter the street, he hit a crossing post, disabling his car. Schweigert then fled on foot but was quickly tackled and detained by officers.
Evidence Found
A search of Schweigert’s car revealed suspected methamphetamine, a used needle, a scale, and Narcan. He now faces multiple felony charges including reckless endangerment, fleeing, preventing arrest, and drug offenses. Additionally, he is charged with misdemeanor DUI, refusal to halt, unlawful use of license plates, and duty upon striking property.
Ongoing Legal Issues
Schweigert, who has three other open cases in Grand Forks County involving drugs and fleeing, is currently being held in the Grand Forks County jail.
