GRAND FORKS COUNTY (trfnews.i234.me) — On Friday, April 11, 2025, a startling sight emerged near Altru Hospital in Grand Forks: a vivid red substance flowing into the English Coulee. Initial fears of a hazardous chemical spill were alleviated when city officials identified the substance as glycol, a non-toxic, biodegradable compound commonly used in medical and industrial applications.
The source was traced to a stormwater line connected to one of Altru Health System’s clinic locations. Altru promptly addressed the issue, mitigating the source of the leak, while city crews worked to contain the glycol already present in the coulee. Despite these efforts, officials caution that residual glycol may remain in the stormwater system for a few days as it clears.
Glycol’s presence in the environment, while not immediately hazardous, underscores the importance of vigilant infrastructure maintenance and rapid response to potential contaminants. The English Coulee, a vital waterway running through Grand Forks, serves not only as a drainage channel but also as a recreational and ecological asset to the community.
