Gary Kokron, a vibrant spirit born on June 26, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, departed this life on November 8, 2024, in Grand Forks, North Dakota after a brief but courageous battle with leukemia, leaving behind a legacy rich with laughter, love, and an indomitable zest for life.
From his early days at Niles North High School, where he graduated in 1973, Gary demonstrated a drive for adventure that would shape his future. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving with pride at the GFAFB where he was assigned to the 319 MMS as a missile analyst, working with the B52 bombers and the SRAMs (short range attack missiles) until 1977 and achieving the rank of Senior Airman (E-4). His military service honed not only his discipline but also his sense of camaraderie, a testament to the bonds he cherished throughout his life.
Upon returning to civilian life, Gary pursued an education at the University of North Dakota, earning his Master’s Degree in EMH, Behavioral & Mentally Handicapped, in 1981. After teaching for 4 years at Nathan Twining Elementary School on the Air Base, his academic achievements laid the groundwork for his entrepreneurial endeavors. Over the years, he owned and operated several beloved businesses, notably the Sights and Sounds Record Shop which was in the basement of the Crown Colony, and later, Ye Ol’ Painters, where his charisma and talent transformed each venture into a community staple. His journey from part-time in 1980 to full-time in 1984 marked the beginning of a colorful career that melded creativity with his innate business acumen.
Gary was a man of many interests. He loved nothing more than to gather with family, not just to share meals but to relish every moment together. With a mantra of “If it was worth doing, it was worth overdoing,” he embraced life with a hearty laugh, often in the company of those he loved most. From the thrill of traveling to the excitement of gambling and admiring classic cars, his passions were as diverse as they were fervent. He particularly delighted in exploring culinary creations from around the globe, bringing flavors and experiences back to those he loved, especially through the art of food.
As a devoted husband of 34 years to Janet (Durham) Kokron, he found solace in their shared life, travels and experiences. His daughters taught him how to love unconditionally and were also the source of numerous headaches. But beyond titles and accomplishments, it was the role of grandfather that filled Gary with unmeasurable pride and joy. Each moment shared with his grandchildren was to him the pinnacle of success, a legacy written in the smiles and laughter they shared.
Gary is survived by his wife, Janet Kokron; children: Ashley (Matt) Ohm of Grand Forks, ND, Amber Brune of Grand Forks, ND; the Ohm grandchildren: Andrew, Charlotte, Mac, Otto, Colson; his father, John Kokron of Niles; siblings: Ken (Kathy) Kokron of Hawaii, John (Darlene) Kokron of Morton Grove, IL, Kathy (Tim) Minds of Cincinnati, OH; brothers-in-law: Mike (Pam) Durham of Watford City, ND, Gary Durham of Baudette, MN and numerous close friends, family members and business acquaintances.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Dorothy Kokron, his brother, Gerry Kokron, and his Mother and Father-in-Law whom he loved dearly, Sally and Charley Durham.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am at Augustana Lutheran Church in Grand Forks, ND, on Friday, November 15, 2024. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
Gary Kokron leaves a world that is a little brighter and infinitely warmer, a tapestry woven with the threads of his love, laughter, and unforgettable stories. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Janet, who holds their shared memories close, and by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. Each cherished moment serves as a reminder of a life well-lived, filled with passion, humor, purpose, and an overflowing heart.
