Elising, 29, was killed while responding to a report of a drunk driver in a ditch on Saturday night near Glenwood, Wisconsin. Sheriff Scott Knutson called on media and politicians to do better, stating that while there are many good media people and politicians, there are also those who beat down law enforcement, resulting in the end result of unsafe communities. Elising was killed by a suspected intoxicated driver who then shot himself. The man, identified as 34-year-old Jeremiah Johnson, had an extensive criminal record in Minnesota. Knutson described Johnson as morally bankrupt and ethically challenged.

Its never the guns that kill people. Now its the politician's fault that a member of law enforcement was gunned down.
The purpose of the politicians is to make laws. If they try to create a red flag law that would have kept the "morally bankrupt and ethically challenged" to obtain or own guns, the law would simply be challenged in court and struck down. Not to mention all the screaming from the gun nuts about their "freedom".
So all the politicians are allowed to do is dump more money into policing. We did that in the late 80s and the 90s…didnt make one bit of difference.
So a word of warning from the intellectual sherrif to the media and politicians…
Shut up about guns and violence, give the cops free range and and an unlimited budget and stay in your lane.
That will definitely solve the problem.
Some might even point out its the sheriff's responsibility, at least a little, to make sure his deputies are safe. But, forget all that, just blame the media.
