Incident Overview

On October 28, at approximately 10:52 a.m., Detroit Lakes police responded to a burglary report at Casey’s General Store. The store manager informed officers that two individuals had entered the store overnight, disabled the alarm system, accessed the safe, and stolen $9,584 in cash. She suspected one of the intruders was a former employee who had recently ceased working at the store.

Investigation Details

  • Surveillance Footage: Officers reviewed video recordings showing two individuals entering and exiting the store within about 90 seconds. One suspect wore a distinctive black sweatshirt matching the manager’s description of the former employee. The other donned a blue sweatshirt, red facemask, red pants, black shoes, and neon gloves.

  • Search and Arrest: A search warrant executed at the residence of the identified suspect led to the discovery of the black sweatshirt and a key to the store. The suspect was arrested on unrelated charges and taken to the Becker County Jail.

  • Confession and Evidence: At the jail, the suspect confessed to collaborating with Campbell in the burglary while under the influence of cocaine. He detailed using the store key to access the premises, stealing money from the safe, and locking the door upon departure. A black duffle bag containing the suspects’ clothing was found discarded nearby, and forensic analysis confirmed Campbell’s DNA on the red facemask used during the crime.
