Former Devils Lake Officer Faces Seven New Felony Charges

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (trfnews.i234.me— A former Devils Lake police officer is now facing seven additional felony charges tied to a series of disturbing allegations, including sexual assault, abuse of power, and stalking. The North Dakota Attorney General’s Office filed the new charges on Monday, October 20.

According to court documents, the investigation began in September after officers responded to a 911 hang-up call from Rey Hennen’s home. The case quickly escalated into a six-hour standoff, during which Hennen allegedly held a baby in one hand and a gun in the other while threatening to kill himself.

Investigators say Hennen sexually assaulted a woman multiple times, dating back to 2019. In one incident, a baby was reportedly present on the bed. Additional allegations include stalking the same woman using air tracking devices and cameras, and breaking into her apartment with law enforcement-issued keys to steal property. Prosecutors also claim Hennen abused his position as an officer by launching a fraudulent investigation against the victim.

Hennen has also been accused of lying to Devils Lake Police when questioned about the earlier break-in, weeks before the standoff. The new charges add to a growing list of offenses, as Hennen was previously charged with terrorizing and reckless endangerment for firing a weapon during the September incident. A projectile reportedly came dangerously close to responding officers.

If convicted on the new charges, Hennen could face up to 20 years in prison. His defense attorney has requested a mental competency evaluation to determine whether Hennen is fit to stand trial.

The case continues to unfold as state investigators and the North Dakota Attorney General’s Office pursue the full scope of allegations against the former officer.
