Fatal Crash on I-94 Near Sterling: 41-Year-Old Woman Killed in High-Winds Collision

A fatal collision occurred on I-94 westbound near mile marker 189, just east of Sterling, on September 29, 2024, at 8:39 P.M. A 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by a 41-year-old female from Bismarck, lost control in high wind conditions, crossing the median into the westbound lanes. The van collided with the side of a 1999 Kenworth semi-truck, driven by a 73-year-old male from Mora, MN. The semi’s rear trailer tires ran over the Dodge, leading to the woman’s death at the scene.

The high winds may have contributed to the crash despite good road conditions. Emergency services from the ND Highway Patrol, Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department, Kidder County Ambulance, and Steele Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. I-94 westbound was closed for two hours with traffic rerouted to Old Highway 10. The crash remains under investigation.
