Fargo, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Fargo man who claimed self-defense in a fatal shooting last year has reached a plea agreement, avoiding a murder conviction. Tyreik Taylor-Roberts, 24, has entered an Alford plea to manslaughter in the death of 25-year-old Jalab Moses, who was shot twice in the chest on September 20, 2024, during an argument in the 1300 block of 8th Avenue North.

An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain innocence while acknowledging that prosecutors have enough evidence to likely secure a conviction. As part of the deal, murder, aggravated assault, fentanyl, and drug paraphernalia charges were dropped.

Roberts now faces up to 10 years in prison and will undergo a pre-sentence investigation before final sentencing is determined.

The Alford plea originates from a 1970 U.S. Supreme Court case and is rarely used in comparison to standard guilty pleas—often reserved for high-stakes cases where defendants wish to avoid harsher penalties without admitting guilt.
