Fargo, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Fargo man has been sentenced to over four years in federal prison after tossing a stolen handgun during a shots-fired investigation outside a Fargo apartment complex.

Kadar Pearson, 21, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Peter Welte to 51 months behind bars following his guilty plea in November 2024 to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The incident occurred in June 2024, when Fargo police responded to a shots-fired call at the Arbors apartment complex. Officers spotted Pearson wearing a sweatshirt and pulling a ski mask over his face, despite temperatures in the 70s.

When confronted, Pearson attempted to discard a loaded, stolen handgun by throwing it under a nearby car. Authorities later recovered the weapon.

At the time, Pearson was an inmate listed as escape status with the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. His criminal history included felony convictions for delivery of fentanyl and theft of a firearm.

The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun offenses through collaborative law enforcement strategies. Investigators from the Fargo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were instrumental in building the case against Pearson.

Pearson’s 51-month sentence will run consecutively to any other existing sentences he faces, followed by three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.

Under federal law, convicted felons caught possessing firearms can face up to 10 years in prison—and even longer if the gun is stolen or tied to violent crime investigations.
