Fargo, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — A Fargo man whose struggle with police was captured in a now‑viral video has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a June 7 incident at the Roberts Commons Garage downtown.
Incident Captured on Video
Police say Joseph Manitowabi, 37, was reported for suspected narcotics activity. Officer Avery Jensen and two other Fargo officers responded to the 200 block of Roberts Street North, where bodycam and bystander video show a confrontation escalating into a physical struggle.
“We informed him that he was detained for reports of narcotics activity,” Jensen testified. “Almost immediately, he started resisting.”
Officers Injured During Struggle
According to court testimony, Manitowabi allegedly pulled his arms free during handcuffing and struck multiple officers.
“I was the first officer to be struck,” Jensen said, adding that he became dizzy and disoriented after being punched. Two officers were treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries, including a bump on one officer’s forehead.
Court Proceedings
Manitowabi’s defense attorney questioned police training and use‑of‑force decisions during cross‑examination. Manitowabi has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 28.
