GRAND FORKS, ND (trfnews.i234.me) — On December 16, 2024, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, 32-year-old Alexander Mitchell Stewart from Emerado was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with six years suspended, for attempted murder and associated offenses. The sentencing includes an additional three years of probation following his incarceration.

Stewart is required to undergo an assessment through the Community Violence Intervention Center’s (CVIC) New Choices program, a restorative therapy initiative designed for violent offenders who have experienced past trauma. He must comply with all recommended programming as part of his rehabilitation.

The charges stem from an incident on September 27, 2023, when Grand Forks County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, a deputy observed Stewart assaulting a woman outside a residence. Stewart fled the scene but was subsequently apprehended during a traffic stop.

According to court documents, the victim reported that on the morning of the incident, Stewart became angry, physically assaulted her, and threatened her life. She recounted being dragged upstairs, with Stewart stating he would return to “finish her off.” In an attempt to escape, she jumped from a second-story window and ran, but Stewart caught her and was dragging her back inside when deputies arrived.

Stewart had previously entered guilty pleas to charges including felony domestic violence, terrorizing, felonious restraint, and misdemeanor driving under suspension. He initially planned to contest the attempted murder charge but later entered an Alford plea in September, maintaining his innocence while acknowledging that sufficient evidence existed for a conviction.
