ELY, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – An 80-year-old woman, Marjorie Jane Hible, died following a fire involving her motorized scooter outside the Boundary Waters Care Facility in Ely, Minnesota.
On January 6, 2025, at approximately 4:38 p.m., emergency services responded to a 911 call reporting the incident. Witnesses indicated that Hible was fully engulfed in flames before staff could assist her off the scooter.
Hible sustained severe burns and was initially transported to Ely Hospital. She was later airlifted to a hospital in Duluth, where she succumbed to her injuries. A staff member also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.
The State Fire Marshal’s preliminary investigation suggests that smoking was the likely cause of the accidental fire. The Ely Police Department has extended condolences to Hible’s family, friends, and caregivers.
