Donald Rey – Obituary

Donald Rey, 88, Minot and longtime Minot Public Schools Guidance Counselor, died on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 in a Minot hospital.

Donald Eugene “Don” Rey was born on February 11, 1936 in Pitt, Minnesota to Walter and Alice (Brown) Rey. He was raised there and in Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1954. He served in the United States Marine Corps for three years. Following his honorable discharge on March 31, 1957 he enrolled in the University of North Dakota – Grand Forks and received his degree in Education with concentrations in Mathematics and Social Studies.

Don married Agnes Vonesh on August 8, 1958 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Reynolds, ND. Don began his teaching career in Thief River Falls, MN in 1961 and continued for five years until he returned to U.N.D. where he received his master’s degree in counseling and guidance in 1970. The family moved to Minot in 1971 when Don accepted a position with the Minot Public School System. He had served at most of the local elementary schools as a Guidance Counselor. Don retired in 1997 but continued to reside in Minot.

Don was a member of the Minot and National Education Associations and especially enjoyed woodworking, furniture refinishing, fishing and reading in his free time.

Don’s loving family includes his wife of 66 years: Agnes; son: Jon; siblings: Walter Jr. (Nancy) Rey and Dyan Glassheim; sister-in-law: Carol Rey and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Irene Meredith, brother: Bill, son: Mark and brother-in-law: Elliott Glassheim.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2024 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church – Reynolds, ND.

Recitation of the Rosary: 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the church.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation: Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
