Paynesville, MN (trfnews.i234.me) — A domestic disturbance turned deadly in Stearns County Monday night when a man was fatally shot during a standoff with law enforcement.

According to Paynesville Police Chief Paul Wegner, officers were dispatched to a residence on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue around 9:05 p.m. on June 2. An armed male suspect had barricaded himself in the basement, prompting a response from Paynesville and Cold Spring police along with the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

An adult female was safely evacuated from the home. Officers tried to negotiate, instructing the man to come to the stairs with his hands visible. During the attempt to arrest him, shots were fired.

Despite life-saving efforts, the man died at the scene. A firearm was recovered. The Minnesota BCA has taken over the investigation. Body cams were in use, and the female victim had minor head and neck injuries.
