Tyra McKenzie Witt, 19, of Detroit Lakes, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court after pleading guilty to felony threats of violence. The sentencing stems from an August 12, 2023, incident in which Witt allegedly threatened to shoot family members after picking up a gun in Frazee.
According to court records, Becker County deputies were called to Hooligans Lakeside Bar on Becker County Road 6, where two of Witt’s family members reported her threats. Witt was later found in the backyard of a family member’s home and was promptly arrested. During the investigation, Witt admitted to struggling with mental health issues, as noted in the criminal complaint.
District Judge Michelle Lawson issued a stay of adjudication on July 8, meaning that if Witt successfully completes her probation, the charge will be dismissed. Witt was sentenced to three days in jail, with credit for time already served.
As part of her probation, Witt is required to abstain from alcohol and illegal drugs, undergo a diagnostic assessment, complete a comprehensive assessment, and follow all recommended treatments, including aftercare. Witt will be under supervised probation for the next five years.
