Detroit Lakes Woman Sentenced for Brutal Assault Outside Zorbaz

Detroit Lakes, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – Angela Lee Kier, 41, of Detroit Lakes, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for felony third-degree assault. A felony charge of simple robbery was dismissed, and no adjudication was made on a misdemeanor fifth-degree assault conviction. Kier was convicted of the two assault charges by a jury on Jan. 24.

According to court records, at around 2:16 a.m. on June 3, 2023, Detroit Lakes police officers responded to an assault report outside Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes. Kier was one of three women who attacked another woman. The victim stated that Kier grabbed her by the hair and punched her, causing her to fall. The other two women then kicked the victim in the head and face. During the attack, the victim grabbed Kier’s leg and bit it.

A witness described seeing a woman with black hair and a pink shirt punching the victim and noted that three women were assaulting her. The victim’s neck was pinned on the running boards of a vehicle and onto the sidewalk area. The witness then called 911.

The three women took the victim’s purse and fled in a car. They were pulled over shortly after on Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes. The victim was treated at the emergency room for a broken nose and bruised face.

On April 11, District Judge Michelle Lawson issued a stay of imposition on the felony assault charge, meaning successful completion of probation will reduce the conviction to a misdemeanor. Kier was ordered to serve 30 days in jail, with credit for one day served, via electronic home monitoring at her own expense. She was fined $500 plus $150 in court fees.

Kier was also ordered to abstain from alcohol and mood-altering chemicals, complete a comprehensive assessment with aftercare, and attend all scheduled mental health appointments. She was placed on supervised probation for five years.
